The Mood Swinger

The client envisioned a show-stopping centerpiece for their home entertainment space in Boston. Their initial request was for a natural stone look—specifically evoking the elegance of black and white marble—but they wanted something with a sharper, modern edge.

The critical twist? They wanted the bar to glow.

Most natural stone is opaque, making it impossible to backlight effectively. The challenge was to replicate the organic beauty of stone while utilizing the translucency of glass to create a fully interactive, illuminated furniture piece.

The Challenge

Stone aesthetics meet modern illumination

The client envisioned a show-stopping centerpiece for their home entertainment space in Boston. Their initial request was for a natural stone look—specifically evoking the elegance of black and white marble—but they wanted something with a sharper, modern edge.

The critical twist? They wanted the bar to glow.

Most natural stone is opaque, making it impossible to backlight effectively. The challenge was to replicate the organic beauty of stone while utilizing the translucency of glass to create a fully interactive, illuminated furniture piece.

The Solution

Precision ceramic frit printing

To bridge the gap between organic texture and modern lighting, we utilized Ceramic Frit In-Glass Printing Technology. This process allows for precise manipulation of ink opacity, giving us control over which parts of the design block light and which parts let it shine through.

  • High-Density Blacks We printed the black ink layers at 4x density. This created a rich, deep opacity that blocks light completely, grounding the design.
  • Translucent Whites The white ink elements were printed at a lower opacity. This deliberate contrast allows light to pass through only specific sections of the art.

The Result

A mood-changing centerpiece

The "Mood Swinger Bar" lives up to its name. By installing interchangeable LED strip lighting inside the cabinet, the client can instantly alter the atmosphere of the room.

The LEDs illuminate the white elements of the digital art while the black areas remain dark and dramatic. The result is a dynamic, mood-changing piece of custom glass furniture that serves as the perfect party conversation starter.

We leaned into the opacity levels of our ceramic frit technology... creating a mood changing, interactive piece of custom glass furniture.

Design Elements

Form meets function

  • Organic Design with a Digital Boost While the client started with a desire for natural stone, we customized a lyrical digital art piece that mimics organic flow but offers a playful, contemporary alternative that stone cannot achieve.
  • Second-Surface Printing for Depth and Durability The ceramic inks are printed on "Side 2" (the inside surface) of the glass.

Visual Depth: This allows the glossy, pristine surface of the glass to face outward, enhancing the brilliance of the colors.

Protection: The art is protected behind the glass, ensuring it never scratches or fades.
  • Low-Maintenance Luxury Unlike porous natural stone which requires sealing and can stain easily, this custom glass bar is the easiest piece of furniture in the house to maintain. It creates a high-end look that can be wiped down with standard glass cleaner.
