Frequently Asked Questions About Glass Kitchen Backsplashes

Can I install a glass backsplash myself?

We love a good DIY project, but this probably isn't the one. Because the glass must be tempered (toughened) to be safe for kitchen use, it cannot be cut or drilled once it leaves the factory.

  • The Process: A pro will come to your house to create a precise template. The glass is cut, polished, tempered and printed by us. Finally, the installers return to fit it like a puzzle piece. One wrong measurement means the whole sheet is scrap, so leave this one to the experts.

What about my outlets and light switches?

Don't worry, you won't lose them! During the templating phase, exact measurements are taken for every socket, switch, and range hood wire. These cutouts are water-jet cut into the glass before the tempering process. Once installed, faceplates go back on top for a clean, flush finish.

Can it really handle the heat behind a gas range?

Yes. Standard glass would crack due to "thermal shock," but back-painted backsplashes are made with tempered safety glass. This allows them to withstand temperatures up to roughly 400°F–500°F (200°C–260°C). Always check your local building codes, but generally, it is perfectly safe for gas, electric, and induction cooktops.

How is the glass attached to the wall?

It’s surprisingly non-invasive. The glass is typically adhered using a neutral-cure silicone adhesive specifically designed for mirrors and glass. In some cases, mechanical fasteners (stylish metal standoffs) are used, but the "glued" look is preferred for that seamless modern aesthetic.

Is it more expensive than tile?

It depends on the tile you are comparing it to.

  • Materials: UV printed glass is generally more expensive per square foot than standard ceramic subway tile.
  • Labor: Tile installation is labor-intensive (cutting, spacing, grouting, sealing). Glass installation is faster.

The Verdict: Generally, glass is comparable to a mid-to-high-end tile installation. It is an investment, but one that lasts a lifetime.
