"I LOVE THIS BAR" - A Collaboration with Newton Kitchens & Design - Custom Printed Backsplash

For this showroom centerpiece, GLASS LAB partnered with renowned artist Suzy Pilgrim @pilgrimwaters to produce a stunning 6 x 9 ft single-piece bar back feature glass wall. The goal was to create a "killer" bar back that serves dual purposes: a functional, easy-to-clean surface and a striking work of art.

This project serves as a prime example of how a custom printed backsplash can transform a space, acting as a showroom educational piece that demonstrates the possibilities of architectural glass.

Project Overview

A showroom centerpiece collaboration

For this showroom centerpiece, GLASS LAB partnered with renowned artist Suzy Pilgrim @pilgrimwaters to produce a stunning 6 x 9 ft single-piece bar back feature glass wall. The goal was to create a "killer" bar back that serves dual purposes: a functional, easy-to-clean surface and a striking work of art.

This project serves as a prime example of how a custom printed backsplash can transform a space, acting as a showroom educational piece that demonstrates the possibilities of architectural glass.

The Challenge & Solution

Scaling & transparency obstacles

The Obstacle: Scaling & Transparency

Creating a seamless 6x9 ft installation came with technical hurdles. The primary challenge was scaling the glass to fit perfectly while ensuring the installation materials (mastic) used to affix the glass to the wall did not show through the light colored background of the art, which had potential to mire the visual experience.

The Glass Lab Solution

We utilized a specific sequencing technique to ensure a flawless finish.

  • Ceramic Frit Printing: We applied the custom art via ceramic frit print on Side 2 of the glass.
  • Back-Painted Opacifier: To solve the transparency issue, we added a back-painted opacifier to the glass post-printing at full opacity. This completely hides the mastic, allowing the colors to pop without interference from the wall adhesive.
  • Ink Level Testing: Rigorous testing was run on ink levels to ensure the perfect saturation and durability.

Key Design Elements

Lighting, depth & signature details

  • Lighting Interaction: The glass features Flat Polish edges designed to capture the transient light from LED strips installed at the bottom. This casts a warm, inviting glow throughout the piece.
  • Reflective Depth: By printing on Side 2, the front viewing surface retains the natural reflectivity of the glass, adding depth to the art.
  • The "Glass Lab Stories" Collection: The installation includes custom 1/2" Low Iron glass shelves featuring unique heart-shaped "tattoos"—a signature detail from our Stories Collection.
